Interview Questions and Answers – EV Integration & Mechanical Design
1. What is DMU in automotive product development?
Digital Mock-Up (DMU) is a digital representation of a vehicle or product assembly used to evaluate component integration, packaging, interfaces, clearances and potential interference issues before physical prototype development.
2. What is EV integration?
EV integration involves coordinating the installation and interaction of various electric vehicle systems and components within the vehicle architecture. This can include the battery, VCU, electronics, wiring harnesses, cooling systems and mechanical structures.
3. What is the importance of EV packaging?
EV packaging ensures that major components can be physically accommodated within the available vehicle space while maintaining required clearances, accessibility, safety, manufacturability and serviceability.
4. What is the difference between HV and LV wiring harnesses?
HV wiring harnesses carry high-voltage electrical power between EV systems such as the battery and electric powertrain components.
LV wiring harnesses generally support lower-voltage electrical and electronic systems such as control units, sensors, lighting and other vehicle electrical functions.
5. What is tolerance stack-up?
Tolerance stack-up is the process of analysing the combined effect of individual dimensional and geometric tolerances on the final assembly condition. It helps determine whether components will properly fit and function within specified requirements.
6. Why is GD&T important in mechanical design?
GD&T defines dimensional and geometric requirements more precisely and helps control component variation, assembly interfaces and functional requirements. It also provides a common engineering language between design, manufacturing and quality teams.
7. What is DFM?
Design for Manufacturing (DFM) focuses on developing a product that can be manufactured efficiently while meeting required quality, cost and functional requirements.
8. What is DFA?
Design for Assembly (DFA) focuses on simplifying assembly operations and ensuring that components can be assembled efficiently and correctly.
9. What is the role of PLM in automotive product development?
PLM systems help manage product data, engineering configurations, revisions, documents and product lifecycle information. They support controlled collaboration between different engineering and development teams.
10. How would you resolve an interface issue found during a prototype vehicle build?
First, I would understand the physical issue and identify the affected components and interfaces. I would compare the physical condition with the approved digital model and drawings, determine the root cause, coordinate with the relevant design and integration teams, evaluate the required change and implement a controlled corrective action.
