Interview Questions and Answers – Paint Shop Production
1. What is PT-CED in an automotive paint shop?
PT-CED generally refers to Pretreatment followed by Cathodic Electro Deposition (CED). Pretreatment prepares the metal surface by cleaning and conditioning it, while CED provides a uniform corrosion-resistant coating before subsequent painting operations.
2. What is the purpose of pretreatment?
Pretreatment removes contaminants and prepares the metal surface for coating. It helps improve paint adhesion and corrosion resistance and provides a suitable surface for the subsequent coating process.
3. What is CED coating?
CED, or Cathodic Electro Deposition, is an electrocoating process in which paint is deposited on electrically conductive metal components. It is widely used in automotive applications because it can provide uniform coverage and corrosion protection.
4. What is the 4M approach in root cause analysis?
The 4M approach examines four major categories that can contribute to a problem:
Man: People, skills, training or operator-related factors
Machine: Equipment, tooling or machine-related factors
Method: Process parameters, procedures or work methods
Material: Raw material, paint, chemicals or component-related factors
5. What are the 7 QC Tools?
The commonly used 7 QC Tools are:
- Check Sheet
- Histogram
- Pareto Chart
- Cause-and-Effect Diagram
- Control Chart
- Scatter Diagram
- Stratification / Graphical Analysis
These tools help teams identify, analyse and control process and quality problems.
6. What is the purpose of robotic painting?
Robotic painting provides consistent application of paint by controlling parameters such as spray path, speed, coverage and application quantity. It can improve consistency, productivity and process control.
7. What is powder coating?
Powder coating is a coating process in which dry powder is applied to a surface, commonly using electrostatic spraying, followed by curing. It is used for durable and uniform protective and decorative finishes.
8. How would you handle a sudden increase in paint defects?
First, I would define and contain the defect, check the affected production period and identify the defect pattern. Then I would analyse possible 4M causes, verify process parameters and material conditions, use appropriate QC tools and implement immediate containment followed by permanent corrective action.
9. How can paint shop costs be reduced?
Cost reduction can be approached through reduction of paint and chemical consumption, minimising rework and rejection, improving transfer efficiency, reducing energy consumption, optimising manpower and cycle time, improving equipment utilisation and reducing process-related losses.
10. What is the difference between corrective action and countermeasure?
A countermeasure is an immediate action taken to control or contain a problem. Corrective action addresses the underlying root cause so that the problem does not recur.
